To those who think the Midwest is bereft of culture and nightlife, Chicago is the ultimate rebuttal. No, we're not all beer and bratwurst, though every city has its vices. From the architectural marvel that is downtown to countless tight-knit ethnic neighborhoods, Chicago proves on every corner that it's a city that works--very well, in fact.

Sears Tower and Skydeck
Get a bird's-eye view of the city--on a clear day you can see 80 miles in any direction.
El: Orange or Brown Line to Quincy
233 S Wacker Dr, Chicago, IL
(312) 875-9696

  • The View: The Sears Tower stands 1,454 feet tall, 110 floors high. On a clear day, viewers can see four states. Don't get dizzy--the average sway is 6 inches from the center. A new Guest Relations Team adds a nice touch and often goes out of its way to be helpful and informative.

  • The Extras: After a $4 million renovation, the Sears Tower Skydeck boasts more than the view. On the way to the top, you can watch TV. When you get there, a new multimedia Chicago exhibit gives you more to do than just look out the windows. Murals and interactive special effects wrap around the entire floor, highlighting Chicago history, writers, artists, historic landmarks, memorable events and sports teams.

John Hancock Center
All grace and strength, it's shorter than the Sears Tower, but it's still among the world's 10 tallest buildings. El: Red Line to Chicago; bus: 3 to Chicago Ave/Michigan Ave; 66 to Michigan Ave; 145, 146, 151 to Delaware Pl.
875 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL
(312) 751-3680

  • The View: The third tallest building in Chicago, the Hancock stands 1,127 feet tall, 100 floors high. The Hancock's greatest draw is the option of kicking back in the 96th floor Signature Lounge with a beer or cocktail and taking in a lakeside view of the city. Add the killer location on North Michigan Avenue, and you have the Chicago insider's favorite sky-high pastime.

  • The Background: Designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the same prominent Chicago firm that designed the Sears Tower, the Hancock--"Big John," as it was nicknamed--was completed in 1970 after five years of construction. It can withstand winds up to 132 miles per hour.
