HOW TO GET TO AUSCHWITZ MUSEUM IN OSWIECIM, POLAND

FROM ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD TO WARSAW, POLAND / WARSZAWA:

Warszawa's/Warsaw's Okecie International Airport (AIRPORT CODE: WAW) is serviced by all major air carriers and is accessible via non-stop and direct flights North America, Asia, Africa, The Middle-east and all of Europe.

Poland's primary air carrier is LOT POLISH AIRLINES.  If you're flying into Warszawa (Warsaw), you will need to make a connection/transfer to either Krakow Balice Airport (Cracow) (AIRPORT CODE: KRK) or Katowice Pyrzowice Airport (AIRPORT CODE: KTW). LOT Polish Airlines has frequent connections to these airports from its Warszawa (Warsaw) hub using modern Embraer ERJ-145 and Aerospatiale ATR-72 prop jets.  Flight time to each city is approximately 45-55 minutes. Once you have reached either Krakow (Cracow) or Katowice, City of Oswiecim / Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum is just an hour away by car, bus or taxi. There are city trains which connect Krakow (Cracow) and Oswiecim, and Katowice and Oswiecim, however these trains leave from the city center, not the airport terminals.

Travel from Warszawa (Warsaw) to Oswiecim is also possible by train, bus, or car, but it can be a rather lengthy 5 to 6 hour journey.  City of Oswiecim train station is linked to most cities in Europe via its extensive railroad system. Therefore, it would be possible to ride a train from Berlin or Prague, for example, and disembark in Oswiecim.

HOTELS  - Need a Hotel?

TRAIN SERVICES:

Trains run infrequently from Krakow Glowny station via Trzebinia or from Krakow Plazow station via Skawina. A journey of 65kms to Oswiecim/Auschwitz Train Station. Both journeys are only a few dollars and take about 45 minutes. Most major hotels in Krakow offer a taxi service that will drive you from your hotel to Auschwitz I and then to Birkenau, wait for you and take you back again. The cost is approximately $50.00 round trip. This is a convenient option if you have limited time, or if two or more are sharing because there are no buses that run the 2km distance between Auschwitz and Birkenau. The taxis do not charge any waiting time either. However you will find plenty of local taxis waiting at both sites if you've arrived by bus or train. Alternatively you can take a bus from Krakow Central Bus Terminal (opposite Krakow Plazow train station) which run about 10 times per day and take about the same length of time.

FROM CITY OF OSWIECIM/AUSCHWITZ TO OSWIECIM/AUSCHWITZ MUSEUM:

From Oswiecim train station there are frequent local buses numbered 24 to 29, which run to Auschwitz Museum, and most will have 'Muzeum' on the front. It is only a few stops and then a short walk along a path to the Museum entrance. The bus cost in Zloty is negligible, although our bus driver refused to take any Zloty from us. From the station it is around 1.5kms or a 20minute walk. There is no other reason to visit the industrial town of Oswiecim, and staying overnight is not recommended. The town is dirty and un-inviting and we found the staff at the Train Station to be singularly unhelpful. There are a few hotels to stay at there if you do need to. The closest to the station is the Hotel Glob, turn left out of the station and you'll see it ahead, about 100 meters. There is a Kantor (currency exchange) in a small bank by the hotel, and one at Auschwitz Museum. Directly cross the road from the station is a small delicatessen an un-inviting Bar and a Restaurant. The latter serves passable food and the staff there were helpful and friendly.
